Setting up your account

What signing up asks for, what happens straight afterwards, and the handful of settings worth looking at once and then forgetting about.

Signing up is one short form. Everything else on this page is a one-time check that takes about a minute, and none of it stands between you and your first scan.

Creating your account

Create your free account asks for 4 things: your Name, your Email, a Password of at least 8 characters, and the terms checkbox. Fill those in and press Register. You can also use Sign in with Google under Or continue with, which skips the form entirely and gets you to the same place.

Your email address is the one field you cannot edit yourself later, so use the address you expect to keep past this job search.

Students and military members get Premium automatically

Sign up with a .edu, .ac, or .mil address and premium access is applied to your account at signup, with nothing to buy and no code to enter. Accounts on those domains are also asked to verify their email address, so watch for that message and confirm it.

What happens next

Registering drops you straight into setup, which is a single screen with Your resume on the left and The job you want on the right. Filling in both sides runs your first scan, so you leave setup with a real match score in front of you rather than an empty dashboard.

If you would rather come back to it, Skip for now takes you out and New Scan in the sidebar picks it up whenever you are ready. See What happens when you first sign up for the whole screen, and Get your first match score in seconds if you would rather skip ahead.

Give your sections a once over

Upload your resume and we extract it into structured sections: work experience, education, skills, summary, and your contact details. From then on you edit it a section at a time, and every scan works against real structured content rather than a wall of pasted text.

Open the Details tab and click down the section list to see how it all came through. It takes a minute and it is worth doing before you scan, because a section that did not come across cleanly cannot earn you points. Anything that needs attention is usually a sign the original file was not ATS compliant, which means an employer's filter would have struggled with it in exactly the same way.

What to check after your resume is read in walks the same pass in order of what matters most.

Your settings

Everything below lives under Settings in the sidebar, and opening Settings without picking a page lands you on Profile.

Profile. Edit your First name and Last name, then press Save. Your Email address is shown here but is not editable, so if you need it changed, email support@skillsyncer.com and we will do it for you.

Password. Set a New Password and repeat it in Confirm Password, using between 8 and 128 characters. This page assumes you are already signed in, so if you are locked out instead, use the forgotten password link on the sign-in page. See Changing your password, email, or name.

Excluded Keywords. This is the global list of terms you have taken out of your scoring, so a skill you are never going to have stops counting against you on every scan you run. You add a term from a scan report, and this page is where you review the list and remove entries you no longer want excluded. See Excluding skills and keywords.

Subscription. This page shows your plan, your renewal date, and the card on file, plus your current Scans Left and AI Credits Left if you are on the free plan. See Managing your subscription and Plans and pricing.

Delete Account. This one gets its own section at the end of this article.

Team, Team Members, and Team Invites appear only if you are on a coach team, so most accounts will not see them. See Roles and permissions.

The Beta Program toggle

The beta toggle also sits on Profile, under Beta Program. Turning it on gives you features that are still being finished, and the panel next to it lists what is currently in there, so you can see what you are opting into before you do. You can turn it off again whenever you like.

Beta features are already on for Military, Student, and Admin accounts, so those accounts do not need the toggle.

A few things worth knowing

  • SkillSyncer is English only, so there is no language setting to look for. A resume or a posting in another language is read as English, which produces poor results rather than an error, and that is worth knowing before you trust the score. See Can I use SkillSyncer in another language?.
  • Sessions expire after a period of inactivity, so you will be asked to sign in again from time to time.
  • Your timezone is handled for you. Weekly credit refreshes key off it behind the scenes, which is why your credits land on the same weekday you signed up.

Deleting your account

Open Settings, then Delete Account, and type delete in the box to confirm. This cannot be undone, so it is worth knowing what goes with it.

An active subscription is canceled immediately rather than at the end of the period you have paid for, and there is no refund for the remainder. Your resumes and scans are deleted outright, which includes the tailored copies and the match scores attached to them.

If billing is what is prompting this, cancel the subscription from Subscription instead. That keeps premium access until the end of the cycle you have already paid for and leaves all of your work in place. See Canceling your subscription.

Full detail, including what is kept and what is removed, is in Deleting your account and your data.
