Trackers, lists, and jobs

How the three pieces of the Job Tracker fit together, why a job is really a scan, and how to shape your lists around the way you work.

The Job Tracker has three pieces and they nest inside each other: a tracker holds lists, and a list holds jobs. That is the whole model, and everything else on the screen is a way of arranging those three things.

"Board" and "column" are not words the product uses, so if you go looking for them in the interface you will not find them.

A job is a scan

One fact explains most of the tracker's behavior: a job on a tracker is not a separate record. It is one of your scans with a list assigned to it.

That has four consequences worth knowing:

  • The match score on the card is the scan's own match score, not something the tracker works out separately.
  • Deleting the job deletes the scan behind it, which is why the confirmation says You will not be able to recover this scan.
  • Re-running a scan updates the same job in place rather than adding a second card next to the first.
  • Two separate scans of the same job posting are two independent jobs, sitting on whichever lists you put them.

A job picks up its list at the moment you create the scan, and both dropdowns come pre-filled, so it lands somewhere findable without you having to think about it. From then on you drag it between lists as the application moves along. See Moving a job between lists, or Why isn't my job showing up in my tracker? if you cannot find one.

The tracker you got at signup

Creating your account creates one tracker for you, named My First Tracker, with six lists in this order:

OrderList
1WATCHLIST
2APPLIED
3INTERVIEW
4OFFER
5NOT SELECTED
6OTHER

List names are stored in capitals, and the rename field capitalizes whatever you type, so Phone screen is saved as PHONE SCREEN.

Making another tracker

Make a new tracker from the plus button next to Job Trackers in the sidebar, and the Create Job Tracker dialog will ask you for a Tracker Name.

Every tracker starts with the same six lists, so your second one is laid out exactly like the first and is ready to take a job straight away.

Adding, renaming, and reordering lists

The six defaults describe a fairly ordinary search, so reshape them if yours works differently.

  • Add a list with the New List button at the far right of the tracker. It arrives named NEW LIST, ready for you to rename.
  • Rename a list by clicking its name and typing over it.
  • Change its icon by clicking the icon, which opens a picker of several hundred pictograms.
  • Reorder by dragging the handle at the top of a list, using the tooltip Click & Drag List to find it.

How many can I have?

As many as you want. There is no limit on trackers, no limit on lists per tracker, and no limit on jobs per list, on any plan, so running a separate tracker per industry or per search costs you nothing.

Deleting a list or a tracker

Both deletions follow the same rule: empty it first. That rule is what stops a stray click taking a dozen scans with it.

The trash button on a list header appears once that list holds no jobs, so move the jobs somewhere else or delete them and the button comes back.

Deleting a whole tracker asks you to confirm with This will permanently delete the tracker and all its lists. All lists must be empty before deletion. This action cannot be undone. If any list on it still holds a job, the delete is refused with All lists must be empty before deleting the tracker.
