Why does it say my PDF is password protected?
How to remove the password or security restriction from a resume PDF, and why employers cannot read it either.
Your PDF carries a password or a security restriction, which means nothing can read its contents except a PDF reader that you unlock by hand. The message is Password-Protected PDF. The part worth acting on is that hiring software hits exactly the same wall, so an application sent with this file can be filtered out before a person ever sees it.
Most likely cause: protection was added when the file was created
Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat or Preview, remove the password protection, then save the file and upload it again.
In Preview on a Mac, use File > Export as PDF and leave the encryption options empty. In Acrobat, the setting sits under the document's security properties. Whichever you use, save it under a new name so you can tell the clean copy from the protected original.
There is no password, but the file is still restricted
A PDF can carry permission restrictions without ever prompting you for a password when you open it. Printing, copying, and content extraction are locked separately, and any one of them is enough to stop the text being read.
The quickest fix is to open the file and print it to PDF, which produces a clean copy with none of the restrictions carried over. Before you upload the new file, check that you can select and copy text inside it.
The file came from someone else
Payroll systems, HR portals, and some resume writing services hand back a protected PDF without mentioning it. When the protection will not come off, go back to the original document you or the writer worked from and export a fresh PDF from there.
If that original is gone, paste the text into a Classic Scan instead. It gives you the same match report without a file upload.
Send the unprotected version everywhere else too
Once you have a clean copy, use it for every application, not only here. A protected resume is a quiet rejection risk with any employer whose system tries to read it.
