Why won't my resume file upload?
The file type and size we accept, plus the failure that looks like an error but actually worked.
The file was turned away before it was ever read, and the reason is nearly always its format or its size. Both take a minute to fix.
Most likely cause: the format is not one we accept
We read .doc, .docx, .pdf, and .txt files, and anything else returns File type not supported. Please upload a .txt, .pdf, .doc, or .docx file.
That rules out Pages documents, .rtf, .odt, .key, and image files. Open the file in Pages, Google Docs, or Word and export it as a PDF or a .docx, then upload the export.
The scan flow is narrower still and asks for a PDF, DOC, or DOCX, so pick one of those three when you are uploading in the middle of a scan.
The file is too big
The limit is 10MB, and going over it returns File size exceeds 10MB limit.
Resume text is almost never that large on its own, so the weight is usually an embedded photo, a logo, or a background graphic. Remove the images and export again, or print to PDF, which recompresses them on the way out.
It said it failed, but it may have worked
We could not process your resume in time and We could not read your resume in time describe a read that ran long, not necessarily one that failed. Check your resume list before doing anything else, because if the resume is sitting there, you are done and a second upload only starts another read.
Very large or graphics-heavy files are the usual reason a read takes long enough to time out. Stripping the images and exporting again solves it here, and it helps with applicant tracking systems for the same reason.
You picked a folder instead of a file
Cannot upload directories. Please select a file. comes up most often when a resume is stored inside a Pages or Numbers package, which macOS presents as a single file but is really a folder. Open it and select the document inside.
The error box is red with no message in it
On a Classic scan, an upload failure can appear as a red box with no text. Read it as "the upload did not go through" and work down the causes above, which between them account for almost every case.
If nothing happens at all when you drop the file in, the upload never started. Check your connection and try again.
